The You Belong Art Bench Program invites artists to transform benches into vibrant public art pieces that highlight local nonprofit missions, fostering community connection and engagement through creative expression. Maya Corona, a Calgary-based artist known for her colorful murals and vibrant, driven work, was selected for this project to create a bench art piece titled “Let Equality Bloom.” SpanicArts, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting Hispanic artists and fostering connections within Calgary’s artistic community, collaborated with Maya on this project. Together, they aimed to create a bench that not only celebrates Hispanic culture but also advocates for unity and equal opportunities across communities. Timeline for project: Start date (Jan, 11, 2021 > Feb 12, 2021)

In this post, we share the creative journey of designing and painting three murals for CUPS Calgary’s Family and Child Development Centre. Working closely with the CUPS team, our goal was to transform their space into a warm, welcoming environment where families and children can feel at home. We’ll take you behind the scenes to see how the murals came together—from early sketches to the final brushstrokes—and hear directly from the staff about the impact of these murals on their community. Join us as we explore how art can bring new life and a sense of peace to spaces that support and uplift those who need it most.
